Overview
Dear Future Me lets you write letters to your future self and choose when they unlock. The app is built to be private by default. I don't run my own servers for your letters, and I can't see what you write inside the app. Your content lives only on your devices and in your own iCloud account (if enabled).
What the App Stores
The app stores the data it needs in order to work:
- Letter title: The name you give to each letter.
- Letter body: The text of the letter you write.
- Dates: When a letter was created and when it should unlock.
- Status: Whether a letter is locked or unlocked.
- App settings: Things like theme/appearance and notification preferences.
This information is stored in your app data on-device and, if enabled, in a private iCloud database linked to your Apple ID. It is not sent to any server that I control.
What I Collect
I do not collect or have direct access to:
- Your letter contents.
- Your unlock dates.
- Your personal identity details inside the app.
I never see your letters unless you choose to share them with me yourself (for example, by emailing screenshots or text when asking for help).
I also don't embed advertising SDKs or third-party tracking libraries in the app.
On-Device & iCloud Storage
Dear Future Me uses Apple's technologies for storage and sync:
- On-device: Letters and settings are stored in the app's local container on your iPhone.
- iCloud (private database): If iCloud is enabled for the app, letters are stored in a private iCloud database tied to your Apple ID. This is only accessible to you (and the app running under your account) and is managed by Apple.
I don't have access to your iCloud account or its contents. Managing access to that data is done through your Apple ID and iOS settings.
In-App Purchases & RevenueCat
Dear Future Me offers optional one-off in-app purchases (for example, early unlocks for specific letters). These purchases are handled by:
- Apple: Payments go through the App Store. I do not see your card details or full billing information.
- RevenueCat: RevenueCat is used to securely manage which purchases you own and which features you should have access to. It receives information such as anonymised user identifiers, purchase receipts, product identifiers, and app version. This is used only to manage entitlements and restore purchases.
Neither Apple nor RevenueCat receive the contents of your letters. They only handle purchase and entitlement data necessary for the app to know what you've bought.
Analytics & TelemetryDeck
Dear Future Me uses TelemetryDeck, a privacy-focused analytics service, to help me understand how the app is being used and improve it over time.
TelemetryDeck collects minimal, anonymous information such as:
- Device type (e.g., iPhone model)
- iOS version
- App version
- Basic usage events (e.g., "letter sent", "app opened")
What TelemetryDeck does NOT collect:
- The contents of your letters
- When your letters unlock
- Your name, email, or any personally identifiable information
- Your IP address or precise location
All data sent to TelemetryDeck is anonymised and cannot be traced back to you as an individual. TelemetryDeck is GDPR-compliant and does not use this data for advertising or share it with third parties. You can learn more about TelemetryDeck's privacy practices at telemetrydeck.com/privacy.
Notifications
The app can use notifications to remind you when a letter unlocks, or for similar prompts that you choose.
- You are asked for permission before notifications are used.
- You can change or revoke notification permissions at any time in iOS Settings.
- Notification schedules are created on-device based on the letters and unlock dates you set.
Your Control Over Data
Within Dear Future Me:
- Read: You can read letters once they have reached their unlock date.
- No editing after save: To preserve the integrity of "past you talking to future you", letters cannot be edited after they are saved. If you want to change something, you can delete the letter and create a new one.
- Delete: You can delete individual letters at any time. This removes them from your device and, if iCloud is enabled, from the app's private iCloud storage associated with your Apple ID.
You can also manage backups and iCloud data for the app from your Apple ID and iCloud settings on your device.
Children's Privacy
Dear Future Me does not require sign-up or identity information and doesn't send letter contents to my servers. The app is not specifically targeted at children, but it can be used by them under appropriate supervision. If you're a parent or guardian and have concerns about content stored on a child's device, you can manage it directly on their device and through iCloud settings.
Changes to This Policy
This policy may change as the app evolves. When it does, the updated version will appear on this page and the "Last updated" date will be revised. Major changes may also be mentioned in the app's release notes.
